Electoral Analysis
Since 2000, the percentage of Democratic vote in Ohio has increased across a wide swath of the state. However, Democratic losses were sustained in south and south-eastern Ohio where coal mining is a major part of the local economy. In the 2012 presidential election, Mitt Romney made frequent visits to the coal-rich south-east where large inroads were made. A decrease in Democratic vote was also seen in the less populous central western portion of the state.
The positive correlation between Hispanics and percent democratic vote is visible from 2000, all the way through the 2012 election. The correlation grew significantly (no pun intended) from .104 in 2004 to .303 in 2008, marking a shift in the wind. This can be partially attributed to the success of George W. Bush with the Hispanic demographic, pulling approximately 40% of the vote. This was confirmed in the 2012 election in which the correlation ran at a robust .309.
There also existed a very positive correlation between Percentage of Democratic vote and the Percent of African American population. It was over .500 every Presidential Election and topped .600 in the most recent. African Americans in Ohio consistently vote Democratic, the challenge for Democrats is to turn them out.
